The Institute For Maltese Culture and The Institute of Cellular Pharmacology created the award « Marie-Amélie Gleizes - Dewavrin Award for science » in order to promote scientific research on the island.
This award is a 10.000 Euros scholarship which seeks to to recognise Maltese people working in the field of science in Malta who have excelled in promoting their work out of Malta and in doing so help to improve the image of Malta and its scientists in the international field. This award is under the patronage of the Maltese Ambassador in France and the French Ambassador in Malta.
A jury of international scientist has been assembled to judge the applications received and consisted of :
Prof. Michel FRANCK. (Veterinary School of LYON)
Prof. Jean Alexis GRIMAUD (Professor of Medicine Paris VI)
Prof. Jean Pierre GAUTHIER (Professor at the University Claude BERNARD)
Prof. Carmelo. AGIUS (Professor at the University of Malta and recipient of the last award for science).
The chairman of this jury is Reverend Professor Peter Seraccino Inglott. Dr Tonio Fenech will also assist the jury.
The award was bestowed on Dr. Raymond GALEA for his molecular researches. Dr Raymond Galea graduated as a Medical Doctor in 1982 and specialised in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. His main research field is in Osteoporosis. He has contributed to various International research studies and is currently a local investigator for a large international study regarding the development of a new treatment for osteoporosis. This concrete action convinced the judges to award him the Marie-Amélie Gleizes - Dewavrin Award for Art and Sciences for this year.
